Felix
Gutierrez: Felix Gutierrez has always
been fascinated by masks and intrigued by their magical and theatrical
expression! He finds the human face to be nature's most amusing
work of art. He has been inspired by many different cultures and
traditions that embrace mask making in the Mediterranean area,
yet Felix´s most artistic work is basically an expression of the
Spanish Carnival Fiesta! A self taught artisan, Felix Gutierrez
lives and works in Seville, (Andalusia) Spain.
Made with Vegetable Tanned Leather
or Raw Cow Hide, the sculpting, bending, stretching and shaping
is finished completly by hand, using no mold at all! Once the
masks are shaped, a stiffening agent is applied and the masks
are ready to be painted with natural dyes and then finished with
airbrushing! This adds a final coat of acrylic varnish to protect
the painted surface.
Suitable for wear and/or for decorative
display, each mask has a thin but durable, adjustable cord to
attach comfortably to the face and you can also hang these beautiful
masterpieces on any home or office wall! A Great conversation
piece anywhere!
Prysm Creations:
As an engineer laid off from the semiconductor
industry, I fell into mask making unintentionally. A friend loaned
me a mask to try to duplicate. It was a fun challenge. I discovered
a new creative outlet!
Prysm Creations developed Incognyto
Masks in Austin Texas beginning in 1999.
From half masks to full-face masks,
all our masks are made from premium quality leather for excellence
in appearance, durability, and molded for maximum comfort.
The style seems to have a universal
appeal, as they are not intended specifically for any particular
theme. I appreciate the beauty in simplicity, so my masks have
a clean sleek mysterious elegance.
Finished masks are easy care, extremely
durable, and surprisingly lightweight. All pigments and finishes
used are non-toxic (according to the labels), and sealed to prevent
color transfer to the skin.
Masks add drama and are becoming
more popular.
There are many opportunities for
wearing a mask. Everything from theme driven Renaissance Faire
and Mardi Gras. Fashion oriented Fetish Balls and Gala events.
Masquerade or costume parties. Then there are the almost cultist
concert followers. Some ritualistic type interests such as Pagan
ceremonies also call for a mask. I have heard of weddings in which
all in attendance wore specially designed masks. Masks offer a
discrete way to participate in photography projects while protecting
their identity. I have made masks for other applications such
as film/stage, a book cover, wrestling, role-playing activity,
and simply collecting.
People have many reasons for wearing
a mask. A mask allows a person a chance to escape the facade that
they show the world day to day. In some cases perhaps it allows
an opportunity to expose something that normally remains hidden
deep inside them without the risk of being identified. For others
it is just as a fun way of attracting attention.... or simply
used as a fashion accessory.
